This summer, Simmal’s own Will Simmons will step onto the starting line of one of the toughest endurance events in the world — IRONMAN Switzerland Thun. On 24th August 2025, he’ll be swimming 3.8 kilometres in the deep-blue waters of Lake Thun, cycling 180 kilometres through the Swiss Alps, and running a full 42.2-kilometre marathon. All in one day.

For those who aren’t familiar, an IRONMAN isn’t just a race — it’s a test of physical endurance, mental strength, and unwavering determination. Originating in Hawaii in 1978, the format has become the gold standard in long-distance triathlon, drawing elite athletes and determined amateurs from around the globe. Thun’s version is considered one of the most scenic and challenging on the circuit, with breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, combined with demanding elevation changes on the bike course.

From Aluminium Man to IronMan

Will’s challenge has already captured the imagination of his friends, family, and colleagues. One friend summed it up perfectly with a banner reading: “Aluminium Man to IronMan”. It’s a nod both to his work here at Simmal — a leading name in aluminium supply and machining — and to the huge leap he’s making from the sales desk to one of the world’s most extreme endurance events.

Why This Matters to Simmal

At Simmal, we pride ourselves on going the extra mile — whether that’s meeting complex machining deadlines, finding the right aluminium solution for a customer’s project, or maintaining the highest quality standards in our industry. Will’s IRONMAN journey is a perfect reflection of those values: commitment, resilience, and an appetite for challenge.

Balancing his training with a full-time role in our business hasn’t been easy. Since joining Simmal in August 2024, Will has been gaining hands-on experience across every department as part of his development towards future leadership. Outside of work, his routine has been dominated by early morning swims, long weekend rides, and back-to-back training sessions that mirror the three disciplines of race day.

The Demands of IRONMAN Thun

The event begins with a 3.8 km swim in Lake Thun — known for its clarity, cool temperatures, and unpredictable conditions. Next comes the 180 km bike ride, split over two loops through the Bernese Oberland, featuring steep climbs, technical descents, and sweeping alpine roads. Finally, there’s the marathon run, three loops along the lakeside and through Thun’s historic streets, where mental grit becomes just as important as physical strength.

Each section is a significant challenge in its own right. Together, they create an event that pushes athletes to their absolute limits. That’s why preparation is everything. Will’s training has been months in the making — building endurance, perfecting technique, and focusing on nutrition and recovery to ensure he can perform at his best on race day.

A Challenge Worth Celebrating

We’re incredibly proud to have Will representing Simmal on such a prestigious stage. His dedication mirrors the approach we bring to our work — carefully planned, expertly executed, and always with the drive to succeed under pressure.

As race day approaches, we’ll be sharing updates on Will’s training and progress. We invite our colleagues, customers, and partners to follow along and show their support.

Good luck, Will — the entire Simmal team is behind you every step, pedal, and stroke of the way.
